Matthew's Death

The Sudden Loss The Heart Attack Matthew dies of a heart attack after learning of the Abbey Bank's failure, which ruins the Cuthberts financially. Anne and Marilla are devastated. The Threat of Blindness Doctor's Warning Marilla visits an oculist who warns that she may go blind if she continues reading and sewing. She is advised to avoid strain. The Decision to Sell Marilla, feeling unable to manage the farm alone and with failing sight, considers selling Green Gables. Anne is horrified. Anne's Resolve Anne decides to give up her scholarship and stay home to teach, so she can care for Marilla and keep Green Gables.

Teaching at Avonlea

A New Path Gilbert's Sacrifice Gilbert Blythe, learning of Anne's need, withdraws his application for the Avonlea school and takes a position at White Sands, allowing Anne to teach locally. Anne's Gratitude Anne thanks Gilbert, and they reconcile fully, becoming friends. She accepts the teaching position. Embracing the Future Anne looks forward to a life of teaching, studying at home, and caring for Marilla. She finds peace in the bend in the road.
